TAMPA, Fla. — Thursday, June 27 is National HIV Testing Day. This is the 25th year health departments across the county are observing the day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of HIV testing and early diagnosis.
Officials say about 135,000 Floridians were living with HIV in 2017 with 18,000 unaware they are HIV-positive
"To see these numbers come down in our state, we need to recognize the role of stigma as a barrier to getting tested," said Laura Reeves, HIV/AIDS Section Administrator. "Normalizing HIV testing and making sure there's a testing option that works for everyone is one way to reduce stigma."
The Florida Department of Health in seven Tampa Bay area counties is giving people a no-cost way to learn their HIV status within minutes on Thursday.
