Breast Cancer Awareness month may be behind us, but the effort to fight the disease is year-round.

Right now, one of Baycare's breast surgeons is taking part in a clinical trial. They're using the Lumicell Imaging System.

The patient is injected with a proprietary fluorescent solution, a scanner is then used and a computer screen will then help show where the cancer and fluorescent may have interacted.

Doctor Peter Blumencranz said COVID-19 paused things after they started last year, but they were able to get going again in the fall.

"This would be a way to try to avoid re-incisions not have to come back, hopefully, let you take a limited removal of tissue around the cancer enough to get clean margins but with the back of this device so that you’re not having to come back," Dr. Blumencranz said.

He also added it's important not to delay mammograms.
