Free learn-to-swim lessons for kids at Tampa Bay area pools on Thursday

TAMPA, Fla. — Hundreds of swimmers across the Tampa Bay area will be participating in the World's Largest Swimming Lesson on Thursday, June 20.

More than 41,000 swimmers in 27 countries participated in the annual event in 2017.

The purpose of the lesson is to provide kids and parents with exposure to life-saving water safety skills and build awareness about the importance of teaching children to swim to help prevent drowning.

The City of Tampa is holding World's Largest Swimming Lesson events all all 12 of the city's public swimming pools.

  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Pool, 2200 N. Oregon Ave.
  • Interbay Pool, 4321 Estrella Ave.
  • Loretta Ingraham Pool, 1611 N Hubert Ave.
  • Roy Jenkins Pool, 154 Columbia Dr.
  • Spicola Family Pool, 2615 E Corrine St.
  • Sulphur Springs Pool, 701 E Bird St.
  • Williams Park Pool, 4362 E Osborne Ave.

Registration for the events will take place at the pools from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. The free swimming lessons will start at 10:00 a.m.

“Learning to swim is one of the most valuable ways we can help protect the youth of the City of Tampa,” said Parks & Recreation Director Paul Dial. “In addition, it is a healthy and fun skill for life!”

A 2014 American Red Cross survey found more than half of all Americans either couldn't swim or didn't have all the basic swimming skills.

Pasco County's Parks, Recreation, and Natural Resources Department is holding a World's Largest Swimming Lesson at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday at Veterans Memorial Park Pool in Hudson.

The event is for children between the ages of 6 months to 12 years.

Participants must register by June 19 by calling the Aquatics Staff at (727) 861-3033 or signing up in person at the pool.

The Bryan Glazer Family JCC in Tampa is hosting a World's Largest Swimming Lesson on Thursday.

The free swimming lesson will begin at 9:00 a.m. For more information or to register, email Aquatics@bgfjcc.com.
