POLK COUNTY, Fla- — Officials say a Fort Meade firefighter was hit by a train on Tuesday, February 2.
The volunteer firefighter was hit by a CSX train around 12:45 p.m., in the area of 14th Street NW, near Hwy 17 North.
The Polk fire chief says firefighters were fighting a grass fire when a CSX train started getting close to the area.
The chief says the firefighter who was injured saw the door was open on one of their trucks, so he ran over to shut the door but didn't make it in time. The firefighter was transported to the hospital with a broken leg.
