A 3-year-old boy was killed in a serious crash in Ruskin on Wednesday night and the driver of a vehicle .
At approximately 7:55 p.m. on Wednesday, a 2001 Toyota Camry, driven by John Rutland, 38, of Ruskin, was traveling southbound from 27th Avenue, crossing SR-674 and at the same time, a 2002 Chevy, driven by Marbella Valencia-Bustos, 20, of Wimauma, was traveling eastbound on SR-674 in the inside lane, approaching 27th Avenue.
The Toyota entered the intersection and traveled into the path of the Chevy. As a result, the front of the Toyota collided with the driver side of the Chevy. The crash caused the vehicle to rotate and overturn.
There were 3 people including 2 children in the Toyota and 7 people including 5 children in the Chevy at the time of the crash.
John Rutland, an employee at the Commissary on MacDill Air Force Base, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. His two children, ages 5 and 9, were in the car with him at the time of the crash. Rutland performed a breathalyzer test after the crash. According to jail records, Rutland had a BAC of .128 at the time of the crash.
Rutland has been charged with felony DUI Manslaughter, 2 counts of felony DUI with serious bodily injury, 4 counts of driving under the influence with property damage and one count of driving under the influence.
All of the occupants of the Chevy were transported to Tampa General Hospital.
A 3-year-old child, passenger in the Chevy, died from his injuries he suffered in the crash.
