The iconic Sunshine Skyway bridge will shut down Sunday, March 4, 2018 for the inaugural Skyway 10K. 7,000 runners from all over the world will participate in the 6.2 mile run which will take runners from Manatee to Pinellas County, running in the northbound lanes.
The northbound lanes will close at 4am to traffic. The race starts at 6:10 a.m. and the bridge will be open to traffic by 10 a.m.
Inaugural Skyway 10k lets you run across the famous bridge for a good cause
According to the Florida Department of Transportation, 4,000 drivers use the northbound lanes of the bridge during the time it will be shut down. And closing the bridge will cost the state more than $5,000 in tolls - which will be reimbursed by race organizers.
For drivers trying to get into Pinellas County Sunday morning, I-75 and a 45+ minute detour will be the only option until the Sunshine Skyway reopens.
The race is being put on by the Armed Forces Families Foundation which provides aid through infrastructure projects that support our military and their families in the Tampa Bay community. 100% of all proceeds from the Skyway 10K will benefit the organization.
For safety and security, only a 24-oz. clear water bottle, ear buds, cell phone, and small pouch for keys are allowed on the bridge. The race is rain or shine. Rain jackets will be allowed in the event it rains. Race organizers will make a decision on the race at 5:15 a.m. if there is lighting, inclement weather, or high winds.
