Florida's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating a video posted to Snapchat that shows a man shooting at a pair of sandhill cranes.

The 10-second video on the social media app was sent to FWC officers because the birds are protected in the state of Florida.

Justin Matthews with Matthew's Wildlife Rescue said the video was sent to him anonymously because he's helped injured sandhill cranes before.

"This is horrible stuff," he said.

Matthews, along with others sent the video to investigators with the FWC.

A spokesman for the department would not say if they have any suspects or leads in the case.

The video appears to take place in the Fishhawk Ranch community near Dorman Road in Lithia, just outside Riverview.

"If he can do that to an innocent bird, what's he going to do to a person?," said Matthews.

Matthews plans to look in the area for the injured bird, but fears it may have died.

You can expect to see more of the birds, as they head south in November and December, which doubles the population in the Tampa Bay area.
