Walking Club bonus: Hillsborough County's Hiking Spree kicks off Sunday

The Hillsborough County Hiking Spree kicks off Sunday and runs through the end of March. It’s a great way to explore neighborhood parks, conservation parks, nature preserves and state parks across the county.

“Hillsborough County is huge, so we want to make sure we have something that everyone can easily travel to,” said Dana McDonald, Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation Program Coordinator.

There are 25 spots on the list, ranging from easy to difficult. There is a rating system so you know exactly what you’re getting into.

Anyone can participate, including folks who live outside of Hillsborough County. Just make sure to register between Nov. 1 and March 31.

The Hiking Spree is based on the honor system. Mark the trails off on the list as you go.

Once you've completed at least eight of the 25 trails, McDonald says participants should submit this form. Then, bring the confirmation email to one of the recreation centers (listed here) to pick up a prize.

This year, participants can choose from a patch, medallion or bandana for dogs that complete the trails along with their owners.

“We just want to encourage people to get out, see your local parks, visit your local trails,” said McDonald.“A lot of times people don’t realize they are right in your backyard.”
