TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa city leaders have activated more than 90 new automatic pedestrian crossings in an effort to help slow the spread of COVID-19. This means instead of having to press a button to get the "walk" signal to work, it comes on with the change of the traffic light.
Walk Bike Tampa initially pushed for this effort, saying it could be key in helping stop the spread of germs.
"Having streetlights where you have to press the button to be able to cross at a time when we're not supposed to be touching the same thing is risky," said Emily Hinsdale with Walk Bike Tampa.

Now, the organization is hoping to help expand the city's list, specifically near schools.
"If children are able to start walking to school and biking to school again shortly, we can at least ensure that they're not trying to run across the road to beat the light because they didn't get a signal," Hinsdale said.
