TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. — The current golf cart ordinance in Temple Terrace permits the vehicles to be driven on city streets. However, the carts are not legally allowed to cross state roads.

That rule poses a problem for drivers who would like to cross 56th Street and Fowler Avenue, both of which are state roads. There are 579 registrations for golf carts in the city limits.

ABC Action News spoke to Justin Hernandez, a golf cart owner in Temple Terrace. He says a proposal to allow crossings of state roads would make it easier for his family to get to local parks.

"As long as the traffic patterns are being followed, I don't see any potential dangers. We're always being cautious," says Hernandez.

The Temple Terrace Low Speed Electric Vehicle Study evaluated crossings on 56th Street and Fowler Avenue. Officials looked at speed, volume and crash data to determine if one or more locations would meet FDOT standards for a crossing.

The following seven crossings were evaluated:

  • Temple Heights Rd at 56th St
  • Mission Hills Dr at 56th St
  • Serena Dr/Druid Hills Rd at 56th St
  • Whiteway Dr at 56th St
  • Raintree Blvd at E Fowler Ave
  • Gillette Ave at E Fowler Ave
  • Hillsborough River at E Fowler Ave
