WAUWATOSA, WI — A U.S. Postal worker has been fired after the FBI caught her stealing cash and checks from more than 6,000 greeting cards.

Investigators say that resident living in two Wauwatosa zip codes complained to the U.S. Postal Service that they were not receiving graduation, wedding, birthday and sympathy cards, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

In January, investigators sent a test greeting card with a $20 bill inside. When the envelope was opened, a transmitter inside sent a signal to agents, who arrested the worker.

On September 12, Ebony Lavonne Smith, 20, pleaded guilty to theft or receipt of stolen mail. She will be sentenced at a later date.

Investigators say that Smith said she was stealing the money to pay bills and take care of her four children.
