TAMPA, Fla. -- A local law firm started a GoFundMe page to feed people who are struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Abrahamson and Uiterwyk, an injury law firm, has been in business for nearly 30 years. It has offices in Tampa, Clearwater, St. Pete and New Port Richey.
The law firm gave an initial $20,000 donation and started a GoFundMe page to help Feeding Tampa Bay.
"We started with a modest fundraising goal. We were humbly impressed by the response we got so we kept raising the goal," said Erik Abrahamson.
The law firm has raised more than $60,000 for Feeding Tampa Bay.
"We matched contributions up to $20,000 and we kept raising the goal as we saw more and more generous people step forward," said Abrahamson.
Feeding Tampa Bay partners with 500 agencies and serves 10 counties. The nonprofit been around for nearly 40 years.
Kelley Sims, Chief Development Officer for Feeding Tampa Bay, said the nonprofit has seen a significant demand for food during the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is the greatest demand in the non-profit's nearly 40-year history.
"The need for food right now is up 400%," said Sims.
"We expect to see May through August as the most dramatic need for food in our region," she added.
Feeding Tampa Bay relies on food and monetary donations. Sims is grateful for the law firm's generosity.
"This innovative way to crowdfund and get some additional support and also gets new people to know our story so we could not be more thankful," said Sims.
"If we get together as a large group or as a team and use our resources efficiently...small contributions by a large number of people can make a huge difference," added Abrahamson.
