TAMPA, Fla. — The Humane Society of Tampa Bay has launched a virtual version of its Critter Camp in order to provide some free online activities for families on caring for animals.

This is a first for the shelter, where workers and volunteers never planned to do this virtually.

But since the state order asking people to stay at home and practice social distancing, as well as similar local orders in Hillsborough and other Tampa Bay area counties, the shelter opted to film video versions of the camps and post them on social media.

The first video launched Wednesday and shows how to care for and feed foster kittens.

The shelter says expect much more in the weeks to come.

"They have some exotic animals that we'll be featuring and some celebrity guests doing some videos," said Maria Matlack with the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.

After the videos launch at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, the shelter will have a staff member standing by to answer questions about the videos in the comments.

"We want to give them good tips and tools and kind of inspire them," Matlack said.

The shelter plans to continue the Virtual Critter Camp for several weeks, if not months, to come.
