PALM HARBOR, Fla. — Vegan chili. Teriyaki beef. Vegan quesadillas. Chicken and waffles.
Farm-to-table produce.
Menu choices at a fancy restaurant? Nope.
The breakfast and lunch menus will look vastly different when school opens Wednesday in Pinellas County.
And they are pretty darn cool.
BACK TO SCHOOL | Everything you need to know
Healthy and hip is the new direction for the Pinellas County School District thanks to forward-thinking folks Food and Nutrition Department.
Vegan and gluten-free items will now be available. A kid-created menu will feature such delicious, if surprising, fare as blueberry scones.
Other changes will include:
- Food trays will now be biodegradable, with some even made out of wheatgrass.
- Much of the fruits and vegetables served will be farm-to-table, delivered straight from Tampa Bay crops.
- Free breakfast is always available.
- A pilot program to decrease waste in an Earth-conscious manner will involve composting on school sites.
