TAMPA, Fla. -- The state’s highest court has suspended a well-known Tampa attorney’s license after he failed to respond to complaints that he withheld settlement money from his clients.

The court suspended Jose Toledo’s license on Christmas Eve and ordered him to pay more than $1,200 in court costs.

Last fall the Florida Bar petitioned Florida’s Supreme Court to suspend Jose Toledo’s license after clients filed 30 disciplinary complaints against him. The bar’s petition to the high court stated Toledo “appears to be causing great public harm.”

Some clients may be able to obtain some of their settlement money through the Florida Bar’s Client’s Security Fund.
