Man flown to hospital with critical injuries after Clearwater hit and run, police say

CLEARWATER, Fla- — Clearwater Police say a man was seriously injured after an alleged hit and run on January 1, 2021.

According to police, a man riding a three-wheel motorcycle at Eldridge Street and Pennsylvania Avenue was hit and seriously injured.

One of the vehicles involved fled the scene. The injured man was flown to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg via Bayflite with possible life-threatening injuries.

Shortly after finding the damaged bike, officers found the car which fled the scene. The driver of that car was still being questioned Friday evening.

Police say that driver, Darrell D. Thomas, of Clearwater, parked the car in the 1100 block of Drew Street after leaving the scene of the crash.

He has been charged with DUI with injuries, leaving the scene of a crash involving injuries and driving with a license suspended or revoked. The victim is undergoing treatment at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The intersection has since reopened. The driver of the car who fled was booked into the Pinellas County Jail and faces three charges.

Officials asked drivers to avoid the intersection while the investigation was happening.
