PINELLAS-PASCO CO., Fla -- Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney Bernie McCabe died late Friday after serving nearly three decades as the top prosecutor for the circuit.

The official Pasco Twitter account and multiple people within the legal community are referencing McCabe’s passing on social media.

McCabe, who was 73, served as the chief prosecutor for the Sixth Judicial Circuit, which includes Pinellas and Pasco counties.

Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore released the following statement:

"I’m saddened about the passing of our longtime State Attorney Bernie McCabe. He was a dedicated public servant that cared deeply about our community. I have had the honor of serving on the Pasco County Public Safety Coordinating Council with him. I always appreciated the thoughtful input he would provide at our meetings. My condolences and prayers to his family."

Judge Anthony Rondolino says he signed an administrative order appointing his chief assistant, Bruce Bartlett, to be the Acting State Attorney until a gubernatorial appointment or election fills the vacancy.

He was first elected State Attorney in 1992 and served eight terms.

Multiple members of the Pasco and Pinellas legal community are taking to Twitter and Facebook.
