Dancing at Lughnasa

When: 8 p.m.
Where: The Straz Center at 1010 N Macinnes Place, Tampa
Cost: $18
Info: Memories and storytelling interweave into a stunning portrayal of provincial Irish life for five unmarried women in the summer of 1936. Michael Evans, now a grown man, recalls this life-changing summer: he is seven years old, in the care of his unmarried mother and her four sisters – as his father and radicalized uncle unexpectedly return during the pagan festival of Lughnasa. Their arrival upends the already precarious existence of wild Irish women tethered to a Catholic-controlled life in post-war Ireland. The summer colors Michael’s world forever after. Winner of both the Tony and Olivier awards for Best Play, Brian Friel’s autobiographically-inspired work captures the confounding tension between the free-spirited lyricism of the Irish soul and the harsh boundaries of religious and colonial rules.
