If you’re a thrill seeker looking for an unconventional full-body workout, indoor rock climbing may be just for you.
For over 20 years, Vertical Ventures has been serving Tampa Bay’s climbing community. Whether you’re a hardcore climber or it’s your first time on the rock wall, there’s a level of difficulty everyone can enjoy.
“A lot of people have that fear of falling or a fear of heights, and you get to conquer that here in a supportive environment,” said Jonathon Childs, belay instructor. “Many don’t realize how much of a whole body workout climbing is. Look at anyone who has been climbing for a long time and they are super fit. It’s like figuring out a puzzle with your body.”
Rock climbing is a comprehensive workout that enhances your grip, forearm, shoulders, chest and leg strength.
So what can climbers expect?
- 40-foot climbing walls
- 200+ climbing lines
- Dedicated training areas
- 20,000-square-foot facility
Vertical Ventures also offers yoga classes, group fitness, circuit training and a traditional workout gym.
Even though rock climbing (and all other adventure workouts) can be risky or unsafe, Childs says it worth taking that leap of faith.
“Rock climbing can be dangerous, but that’s why we teach classes to minimize the risk,” said Childs. “With that element of more danger, brings more fun for some reason.”
Daily admission costs $18 for adults and $12 for children 12 and under. The best deal is the introductory class, which costs $35 and includes your admission, all the gear you need, belay instruction and a 2-week introductory membership.
Vertical Ventures offers full rental options like climbing shoes, harnesses, chalk bags, ropes, belay devices and crash pads.
To save time, they also suggest that you fill out a waiver online before your visit.
Vertical Ventures has locations in both St. Pete and Tampa. Click here for more information.
