ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Detectives in St. Pete are investigating after a 2-month-old baby drowned in the family bathtub on Sunday afternoon.

According to detectives, the mother of the baby prepared a bath for the 2-month-old and placed a transportable infant bathtub inside the regular tub and filled it with water.

After almost an hour, a family member went into the bathroom to check on them and found the baby submerged in the tub, and both her and the mother unresponsive.

The family member performed CPR until paramedics arrived, and the mother and baby were transported to the hospital.

The baby was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after.

The mother was treated and later released. Detectives say she appeared to suffer a medical episode that caused her to lose consciousness. The death appears to be accidental in nature, according to detectives.
