Police say that a drunk driver drove his jeep across a bridge in Clearwater and straight into the water on Monday morning.

Clearwater Police say that around 1:45 a.m. 21-year-old Ryan T. Jones, of Largo, drove a Jeep Wranger across the bridge at 800 Bayway Boulevard northbound at a high speed and didn't negotiate the turn at the north end of the bridge and ended up in the water.

Jones was the only person in the car and was able to get out and swim to shore.

Clearwater Fire Department Dive Team responded and searched the vehicle to make sure there were no other occupants. The Coast Guard also responded to do an area check to make sure there was no one else in the water.

Jones has been charged with DUI and careless driving. He blew a .22 on a breath test.
