Water main break causes erosion to form under Fletcher Ave. bridge over Hillsborough River

All westbound lanes on East Fletcher Avenue where it crosses over the Hillsborough River are closed through next week at the minimum after a water main break caused erosion to form under the westbound lanes of the bridge.

All westbound lanes on Fletcher Avenue from I-75 to Telecom Parkway are shut down.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office was on scene diverting traffic southbound on Telecom Parkway to Morris Bridge Road on Tuesday. There were delays in the eastbound lanes of Fletcher due to the backup caused by a water main break.

Repairs are underway, originally expected to extend until 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

However, that timeline was extended until next week or longer after crews discovered the water main break had caused a part of the bridge to erode.

Structural engineers for the county were out on the bridge on Wednesday, developing a plan to fix the eroded bridge abutment.

Once county crews finish the repair design, city workers can begin repairs.

Motorists are advised to use alternate routes.
