Tampa Police and firefighters are at Peter O. Knight Airport on Davis Islands investigating a small plane in the water, authorities said.
A Piper 28/140 airplane crashed into the water off Davis Islands near downtown Tampa during takeoff shortly after 1:30 p.m. Sunday, the Tampa Police Department said.
The pilot, whose name was not released, was the only person onboard. He made it out of the plane uninjured before it went under water. The pilot was rescued by passing boaters.
The Tampa police dive team and a Tampa Fire Rescue crew responded to the scene.
The investigation is being handled by the Federal Aviation Administration.
