Manhole cover blows its top in downtown St. Pete

St. Petersburg police are investigating the cause of a manhole cover explosion on Central Avenue Sunday morning, officials said.

No one was injured when a manhole cover blew off and smoke poured out in the 200 block of Central Avenue in downtown St. Petersburg shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday, St. Petersburg police spokeswoman Yolanda Fernandez said.

St. Petersburg police temporarily closed Central Avenue from Second Street North to Fourth Street North while they investigate the incident.

Police, St. Petersburg Fire Rescue and public utility companies were on the scene to investigate the incident.
