One person died overnight in a house fire in Venice in southern Sarasota County and two Sarasota County sheriff's deputies were injured during an attempted rescue.

The fire was reported about 12:30 a.m. Saturday in the 2600 block of Carmine Road, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said.

Two deputies, whose names were not released, tried to enter the burning house when they arrived on the scene. The injured deputies were taken to an area hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and exposure to carbon dioxide then released.

The name of the resident who died has not been released, but the immediate family has been notified, deputies said.

Sarasota County firefighters were assisted by firefighting units from Venice and Nokomis and the Sarasota County deputies. The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.
