In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day. The week in which that date falls has been designated as National Police Week. During that week, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world visit Washington, D.C. to participate in the planned events that honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
