Florida ranks 3rd in the number of cars on the road with unfixed safety recalls

4 million cars in Florida have open safety recalls

CarFax estimates more than 63 million recalled vehicles are currently running the roads across the United States. About one million of them are driving around Tampa Bay.

Two years ago one in five cars on the highway carried an open recall. This year it is one in four. CarFax says the reason is two-fold. People either don’t know the car they are driving has a defect or they are not making the repair a priority.

The millions of air bag recalls likely play a part in the higher numbers this year. Also nothing in the law forces dealers or private sellers to repair recalls on any vehicle so it is on the owner or buyer to do the research.

To find out if yours is on the list takes nothing more than a tag or vin number and about 5 minutes of your time. Check out www.Safercar.gov or www.mycarfax.com.

Remember the fixes are free and often take place in less than a day. New data also suggests the majority of unfixed vehicles involve family mobiles including minivans and SUV’s.
